E-rate Update - PDE Posts National School Lunch Numbers
Message Posted March 18, 1998
Thursday, March 19, the Pennsylvania Department of Education posted PA'S 1997-98 National School Lunch Data to the PDE E-rate web site. The figures listed are the actual numbers reported to PDE in October, 1997 by schools, and represent numbers of students actually participating in the National School Lunch Program.
We are providing these figures to schools and libraries as a guide to determine their E-rate discounts. Schools are listed by Intermediate Units and then organized alphabetically by public school, then nonpublic school. Several important points to remember:
1) The data reflects ACTUAL participation, however the E-rate program allows schools to use ELIGIBLE participation. So in some cases, the figures schools use to determine their E-rate discounts may be higher than what are listed on the web site.
2) Although school district totals are listed, this does not reflect the number that district should use to determine their discount. As you know, schools must first determine whether their service is shared or site specific. If it is site specific, then that building's eligibility data would be used to determine its discount. If the service is shared, then each building's eligibility data would be used to perform a weighted calculation as required in Form 471, Item 14. Detailed instructions on performing this calculation can be found on page 10 of the Form 471 instructions and the recently released SLC Fact Sheet on Discount Calculations.
