E-rate Update - FCC Seeks Comment on Funding Levels
Message Posted May 18, 1998

As stated in an earlier e-mail message, the FCC released their report to Congress on Universal Service which indicated they had not yet set funding levels for the E-rate program for 1998 and would be seeking public comment on the issue. As expected, the FCC is now asking for public comment on whether funding for schools and libraries should equal demand (estimated by SLC to be $2.02 billion) or be limited to an amount that does not cause long distance rates to rise (estimated by the FCC to be $1.67 billion).

If you wish to submit comments to the FCC, I first encourage you to visit their website <www.fcc.gov/learnnet> and read their official public notice as it provides a full background of the issue. Comments must be received at the FCC on or before May 22 and must reference: Proposed Revision of Maximum Collection Amounts for Schools and Libraries and Rural Health Care Providers, Public Notice, CC Docket No. 96-45, DA 98-872. Informal comments or a copy of a formal filing can be sent electronically to the FCC by using their Electronic Comment Filing System accessible at
http://www.fcc.gov/e-file/ecfs.html/ . For further information call Irene Flannery at the FCC Common Carrier Bureau at 202-418-7400.
