E-rate Teleconference Set; 6th and 7th Wave Planned
Message Posted January 25, 1999

According to sources, the Schools and Libraries Division plans to release its 6th wave of E-rate discount commitment letters this week and a 7th wave
at the beginning of next week. Last week, the SLD released $211 million in E-rate funds yesterday to 4,500 applicants. Eighty-five percent went to
schools and libraries eligible for discounts of 80% or moreand funding included $120 million for internal connections. Two more large distributions are expected before the end of January. To date, the SLD has released $427 million of $1.9 billion authorized for 1998 period that ends June 1999. As you can see, this means that there are many more letters to come for those of you who are still waiting anxiously.

SLD NATIONAL SATELLITE TELECONFERENCE

The Schools and Libraries Division will sponsor a teleconference on Thursday, January 28th , 1-3 p.m. EST. The teleconference will address the
question: "Why you should apply now for e-rate 1999-2000 even if you're still waiting for a 1998 funding decision?" The SLD wants to remind
applicants that before the window closes on March 11, 1999, applicants need to file a form 470, wait 28 days after it's posted, and then file Form 471
with all of its paper attachments. To give yourself enough time to complete each step, according to a SLD announcement, "you'll want to get
started no later than February 5, 1999."
