E-Rate Funding Level for 1999-2000 being Determined
Message Posted April 29, 1999
The FCC is now in the process of making a final decision regarding the size of the E-Rate fund for the second year of the program. Last year the FCC cut funding by nearly 50%, significantly below the program's annual $2.25 billion cap. As a result, many schools and libraries received no discounts on internal connections.
In the next two weeks the FCC will vote on the size of the E-Rate for year-two. According to estimates from the SLD, requests for funding in year two are around $2.5 billion, even more than the $2.25 billion cap. Therefore the FCC will have to significantly raise the fund size from the current $1.66 billion if schools and libraries want to see discounts on internal connections for year two.
If you have an opinion either way on this matter, I have included the list of elected officials to whom you should direct your comments.
Letters should be addressed to each of the FCC Commissioners listed below re: CC Docket 96-45.
You may want to send or fax a copy of your comments to your members of Congress as well.
