E-rate Training Available for Year 5
Many of you have called and written asking if there were going to be E-rate training workshops held again this year. The answer is yes; we are planning to conduct E-rate training for beginners at 3 locations during the month of November. The exact dates and locations aren't firm yet, but they likely will be in the Valley Forge area (Philadelphia), the Harrisburg area, and the Monroeville area (Pittsburgh).
And we again are creating the mammoth 3" E-rate Binder that has been so popular in previous years to use and distribute at the trainings.
In the meantime, my colleague and friend from the Virginia Dept. of Education is hosting three teleconferences that will be of interest to E-rate beginners and veterans alike. The details are below. I encourage you to call the toll-free number and register if you wish to receive the satellite coordinates.
Teleconference 1 - E-Rate Coordinator Training Conference, October 11th, 1:30-3:30 PM, ET (live-analog), 5:30-7:30 PM, ET (delayed-digital format)
The Schools and Libraries Division of the Universal Service Administrative Company held its annual train-the-trainer conference on September 17-18th in Washington, DC. Because of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, very few people attended. The Virginia Department of Education will present a two-hour overview of this training. Local, state, and regional E-Rate training coordinators and applicants can benefit from this teleconference. A significant portion of the teleconference will outline new Children's Internet Protection Act requirements. Please note that the deadline for submitting Form 486 is October 28th. Applicants that do not act by the deadline will lose funding. This teleconference is available at no charge, but you must register to receive satellite coordinates.
Teleconference 2 - Year 5 for Beginners, October 18th, 1:30-3:30 PM, ET (live-analog), 5:30-7:30 PM, ET (delayed-digital format)
The federal E-Rate program has brought millions of dollars in technology discounts to schools across the United States. It does, however, remain a cumbersome, complex program administered by the Schools and Libraries Division, a not-for-profit company set up by the Federal Communications Commission. Failure to follow program procedures correctly will result in denial of funds. The Virginia Department of Education and SERC's (Satellite Educational Resources Consortium) Star Schools program will present this two-hour teleconference for local E-Rate administrators new to the program. Seasoned veterans may also find some value in refreshing E-Rate application skills.
Teleconference 3 - Year 5 Maximizing Discounts, October 25th, 1:30-3:30 PM, ET (live-analog), 5:30-7:30 PM, ET (delayed-digital format)
On the eve of the opening of the Year Five E-Rate filing window, the Virginia Department of Education and SERC's Star Schools present a two-hour teleconference for schools and libraries on new issues to consider with the program including Internet filtering, new forms, new regulations, and how to get the most out of the program.
There is no charge for any of the teleconferences if you are from Pennsylvania, as SERC is underwriting the cost.
Please call (800) 476-5001 to register. Purchase orders are accepted. For additional information, please call SERC at (800) 476-5001.
